Murder probe after man dies in stab attack

POLICE launched a murder inquiry today after a man was stabbed to death in Enniskillen.

POLICE launched a murder inquiry today after a man was stabbed to death in Enniskillen.

Three people were arrested shortly after the man, named locally as Tony Woods, was found dead with stab wounds in his home at Windmill Heights off Sligo Road.

The father-of-five's body was discovered around 2.30am when police were called to his home.

The victim is believed to have been in his 50s.

An RUC spokesman said three people had been arrested and were helping police with inquiries.

It is understood that the incident is not being treated as sectarian or paramilitary related.

Local councillor Joe Dodds said he was "shocked" by the incident.

"It is the first time for many years that I can remember anything like this here," he said.

Mr Dodds, who lives less than a mile away, added: "This is a real tragedy and we must think of his family.

"I have spoken to residents and they had heard nothing and never thought anything like this would happen in their neighbourhood."

The estate is situated on a hill overlooking Lough Erne and is close to the town's Army base.

One neighbour said: "We are desperately shocked. The first thing I heard about this was on the radio and I looked out the window and saw the bungalow next door had been cordoned off.

"There was the usual noise in the house last night of neighbours rattling about, but there certainly was no sign of any trouble next door.

"Tony was a great sportsman and he was a very happy-go-lucky man. The whole community is devastated by what has happened."

It is understood Mr Woods, who was separated and had five children, lived on his own. His ex-wife was too distraught to speak about the tragedy today.

It is also understood that a daughter of Mr Woods, who is living abroad, has yet to find out that her father has been stabbed to death.

A close friend of Mr Woods added: "I am sure his family is absolutely devastated by this awful tragedy. It is awful to wake up to hear the news that your friend has been killed in his own home."

A post mortem examination was expected to be carried out later today.
