The Real IRA has claimed responsibility for a 1,200lb van bomb abandoned on the outskirts of Derry last weekend.

Police discovered the bomb, which was primed and ready to be detonated, near the Foyle Bridge early on Sunday morning.

The van containing the device was abandoned after attracting the attention of a police patrol.

The bomb was twice the size of that which killed 29 people in Omagh, Co Tyrone, five years ago and raises new questions about the capabilities of the Real IRA, which split from the Provisional IRA following the IRA ceasefires of the 1990s.
