Unfrocking all round?

Robes are cast off as matter of principle

IT is very refreshing in these sleaze-ridden days to hear that the First Citizen of Belfast, Alban Maginness, was dispensing with the robes of his office as a matter of principle.

These trappings of office, the Lord Mayor confidently proclaimed, were a kind of ivy that had been acquired over the years and should be discarded.

These trappings of office, the Lord Mayor confidently proclaimed, were a kind of ivy that had been acquired over the years and should be discarded.

Sadly, principles are seldom mentioned nowadays, and less rarely, consistently adhered to.

Perhaps in pursuit of that principle he will tirelessly campaign for the unfrocking of the clergy, to enable them to rid themselves of centuries of accumulation of robes, gowns, vestments, etc.

An even easier implementation would be to discard in his own well-paid profession the ivy of the legal trappings.

That would really be putting his money where his mouth is. I wonder what the learned judge would say?THE EMPEROR'SNEW CLOTHES,Lisburn, Co Antrim.
