For over 30 years, David McDonald worked in Ireland’s biggest prisons and was face to face with notorious household names such as John Gilligan, Christy Kinahan and Dessie O’Hare.

He started in Mountjoy in 1989 then moved two years later to Portlaoise Prison — then the most secure prison in Europe due to its presence of IRA and other subversive prisoners.
