Beauty masterclass: How to find the perfect moisturiser this winter

Paddy McGurgan is one of NI's best-known beauty experts and over the coming weeks he'll tell you all you need to know about the latest make-up techniques

During the winter, skin can react differently to the harsh effects of cold, rain and wind. For this reason, it's important to tailor your skincare regime just as you would any other part of your beauty routine.

As the temperature drops, our skin is more likely to change or fluctuate abnormally with different humidity levels in the autumn and winter months.

The drier the air, the more moisture it sucks from your skin.

We are more likely to suffer dryness and flakiness, especially those who are prone to eczema or any other skin conditions.

Cream of the crop: Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream, £100

This cream really is magic, and I should know as I've tried this incredible potion.

While it's at the high end of the skincare scale in terms of price, it really is a worthy buy. As well as rehydrating parched skin, it works well as a night mask too.

Comfortable to wear, Charlotte Tilbury's most famous cream is perfect for day-long moisturisation. With a gel-like texture, magic cream lifts, plumps and hydrates the complexion, bringing new life to dull, dehydrated skin.

Sweet as honey: Mario Badescu Honey Moisturiser, £15

Honey Moisturiser is a godsend for a lacklustre visage and, in particular, older/mature skin. Expect added radiance thanks to honey and peanut extracts in this product, which also plumps and revitalises tired skin. Prepare to be amazed by the added bloom on application of this moisturiser.

It's the bomb: Garnier SkinActive Moisture Bomb Water-Cream Day Moisturiser, £5.33

This incredibly lightweight moisturiser is perfect for wearing underneath make-up. With added antioxidants, the skin is revitalised and hydrated. It's a moisturiser that supercharges the skin's natural radiance and, because it melts into the skin and is non-greasy, it's quick and easy to use, making it a handbag essential.

Olay, Olay, Olay...: Olay 2in1 Hydration + Flawless Blur Moisturiser Cream, £4.89

This hard-working product is an ideal combination of moisturising properties with a generous dollop of light diffusing particles.

These iridescent qualities instantly smooth the look of fine lines giving your skin a flawless finish.

The lightweight formula with powerful antioxidants immediately infuses the skin with hydration, helping to lock in moisture throughout the day and protect from the harsh effects of cold winter weather.

Paddy's guide to finding the perfect moisturiser:

1. Try out a moisturiser first if possible. Get a feel for the product before you buy to ensure that it works for you.

2. Check that the product contains a sun protection factor. This is preferable as it helps protect your skin against damaging UV and UA rays and is also an added barrier against ageing.

3. Know what you want in your product ...and stand by it, whether that is anti-ageing, revitalising, hydrating or oil-free.

4. Check if a moisturiser is fragrance-free as some aren't. For those with sensitive skin, it's best to be wary when choosing a fragranced product in order to avoid possible skin irritation.
