Beauty queen Alixandra Halliday in Miss Earth contest

By Donna Deeney

A student from Londonderry will represent Northern Ireland in an eco-inspired international beauty contest.

Alixandra Halliday (19), from Eglinton, is taking a break from studying to raise environmental awareness.

Contestants from over 100 countries will participate in the finals of the Miss Earth competition in Thailand in December.

Alixandra said: “I was about to begin the third year of my degree in photography but have put that on hold now while I do the promotional work for Miss Earth, but I will be using the camera skills I have learned on my course to help me. I am planning a photoshoot at a charity shop to show people how important it is to recycle clothes.”

Alixandra embarks on her trip to Thailand in November. She will continue her environmental work before the final.

She adds: “I am looking forward to the trip to Thailand, working there on the Miss Earth projects, but I am not thinking too much about the actual final.

"When you consider that there will be girls from over 100 countries competing, I don't think a wee girl from Northern Ireland will be picked as the winner but I am excited about taking part.”
