Crop tops make a return

Before you tuck into that second piece of cake you may want to take note that this season’s hottest trend will be the crop top. Bad news for lovers of all the good things in life, but great news for anyone who loved 80s fashion.

Although the crop top hasn’t made much of a fashion appearance since the era of keep-fit chic, it is back and has had a much needed makeover. Gone are the gaudy colours and clingy materials and in are chic, flattering, simplistic styles that ooze laidback glamour.

Models sauntered along the catwalk revealing toned midriffs at Spring/Summer 11 shows for labels such as Albino D'Amato, Blumarine, Bottega Veneta and Cacharel.

Teamed with either knee-length skirts or casual slacks, the crop top meant just a hint of flesh was on display, ensuring the look was classy and just a little bit provocative.

Many of the crop tops on the runways have been in a tank top style, although there have also been some bandeau options.

If you really don’t feel brave enough to put your stomach on display, you could always try layering a baggy crop top over a tight T-shirt, or wearing a body underneath a loose-fitting version. Also, if you team your tiny top with a high-waisted skirt or pant, there will be no need to worry about extra flesh being on display.
