Down Royal women all winners in style stakes

By Rebecca Black

Eyes were almost as firmly on the fashion as the May Day event at Down Royal went off in style.

There was jump action on the May Day bank holiday as the popular venue played host to a seven-race card.

It was one of four major racing events across the UK and Ireland yesterday alongside Windsor, Bath and the Curragh.

It was a particularly successful day for trainer AJ Martin, who notched up four victories on the course, two of which were ridden home by Ruby Walsh.

Throngs of punters packed the stands at the start of the new racing season and gasped at some of the tight finishes, while the bookies were quids in as race-goers tried their luck to back a winner.

However, for others, the meet was more about fashion and enjoying a day out in the sunshine at Down Royal.

Women from across Northern Ireland made their way to the racecourse yesterday for the opportunity to show off some of the latest trends - and no doubt turned a few heads in the stands as they did so.
