European success for yoga pair
Two very flexible Belfast women have won silver and bronze awards in the European Yoga Asana Championships.
Jennifer Thornton was rated second in Ireland and Jessica Murphy Samoy third, after sweating it out in a hot room to hone their Bikram yoga skills.
Bikram Yoga is a 26-posture sequence practised in a room heated to 105°F (40.6°C) with a humidity of 40%. Celebrity practitioners include David Beckham, Lady Gaga and Madonna.
Jennifer and Jessica, who study Bikram at Conway Mill, are the first Belfast yoga practitioners to take part in the European Yoga Championships. Erin Douglas, director of Yoga At The Mill, and Tony Hiley, yoga teacher, have been coaching them in the ‘hot’ room for the past few months.
Members of Yoga At The Mill, friends, family and colleagues raised £1,200 to get the group to Denmark. The competitors demonstrated poses to an audience from all over Europe.
The studio is opening its doors at the Conway Mill this Friday (May 11) at 6.30pm to show a video of the competition day, and offer a chance to learn more about how to get children involved in competition.
