Fashion designer JW Anderson is hat stuff on catwalk
Northern Ireland's top haute couture designer has turned the heads of fashionistas once again as he showcased daring shapes and bold concepts at London Fashion Week.
Known for pushing the boundaries, JW Anderson's spring and summer 2015 collection was anything but dull with its French feel.
The Magherafelt designer, whose father is former Ireland rugby captain Willie Anderson, created a major buzz with his oversized black leather sunhats that only revealed his models' lips.
"I like the idea of a voyeur, that you had to look up into the hat to see what this woman was about," said one audience member.
The Guardian's reviewer was approving: "It wouldn't be a JW show without a new take on androgyny. This time around it was a little more chic, a little more bourgeois."
The New York Times called his models "fierce and fast, stalking by with their faces concealed by floppy leather hats".
It continued: "Leather here was untethered: wrapping midriffs, scrunched into high-necked crop tops and short skirts. Function became funhouse with oversized buttons and lapels, backward-facing sailor pants and odd cuffs protruding from skirts.
"Many Average Janes would find these touches incomprehensible; Anderson's many rapt fans would call them 'directional' and they are eagerly pointing themselves toward his forthcoming collection for Loewe in Paris."
