Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has died in Paris aged 85.

The German fashion guru died on Tuesday, February 19 after a period of ill health, French magazine Closer reports.

He was named creative director of luxury French fashion house Chanel in 1983.

The world-renowned designer missed his end-of-show bow at the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week in January as he was unable to attend.

Lagerfeld, known for his iconic white ponytail and dark sunglasses, also created collections for Fendi as well as his own signature label.
