How to get sculped eyebrows like the Duchess of Cambridge
Stephanie Bell meets the Belfast beautician who can give you big bold brows like Dannii, Kylie and Kate — in just an hour.
The Duchess of Cambridge caused the usual stir when she stepped out earlier this summer sporting more defined eyebrows. The fashion pack went into a frenzy of speculation about how the young royal had achieved her thicker, darker and slightly more arched brows.
Kate, who has apparently long been concerned about her fair and slightly patchy eyebrows, reportedly uses a £15.50 Bobbi Brown eye shadow to fill in her eyebrows.
As usual, she’s bang up to date with her new wow brows as the high definition look is currently all the rage among celebrities.
And now two London sisters have come up with a new way of achieving the look with a very precise procedure called HD Brows, which is proving so popular in Northern Ireland that one local consultant says she is struggling to hold out to demand.
Anna McCluskey is one of just a handful of people trained locally to offer the bespoke, designer eyebrow treatment which was launched a year ago.
“Local women are going crazy for it, everyone wants the perfect eyebrow,” says Anna.
HD Eyebrows is already an A lister favourite with Kylie and Dannii Minogue reportedly arranging for their make-up artist to train in the procedure. Jenny Frost, Jodie Marsh, Gemma Bissiz and Claire Cooper are also among the long list of celebrities who have been wowed by the new brows. Former Atomic Kitten Jenny Frost said of her new HDs: “After having the treatment I look back at pictures now, and think, how did I ever go about my life with those eyebrows!'
Anna (34), from Derriaghy who is married to Richard and has one son, Jay (one), has always worked as a fitness instructor.
Yet she was so stunned by the transformation to her own face after having HD Brow treatment that she decided to train and offer it to others.
“I have always had a thing about nicely shaped eyebrows and for as long as I can remember I have had mine professionally shaped,” says Anna. “I heard about HD brows on TV and just had to try it. I fell in love with the whole concept and was amazed by the difference it made to my face.
“I didn’t know it before but the arch of my brows had always been too high which made me look as if I was constantly cross and dragged my eyes down.
“The difference in getting them shaped right and to suit my face is remarkable. I think they make me look younger and I just love them.”
HD involves a seven-step procedure involving a scientific approach to finding the perfect shaped brow to suit each individual face shape.
This is achieved by carefully measuring the face to find the exact point for the arch and then using a mixture of techniques including threading, tweezing, plucking and tinting to achieve a bespoke brow that opens the eyes and suits your face shape.
The emphasis is on long-term design rather than immediate hair removal or brow tidying.
HD can also help thicken brows for people whose hair has stopped growing because of dead follicles caused by over plucking and there is a home care growing kit which can encourage the hairs to grow back.
“Having the right shape is everything,” says Anna. “The face mapping shows us where the brow should start and we can work with the downy hair and tint it and incorporate it into the brow to make it appear thicker.”
Anna is now hoping to train in semi-permanent make-up so that she can help create brows for people who have lost their hair through cancer.
She explains: “It has always been my dream to work with cancer patients but I just didn’t know in what capacity. My dad had cancer a few years ago and when I was in the City Hospital while he was getting his treatment I met a lady who was devastated by losing her hair through chemo.
“Doing the HD training has given me a new skill that I think I can now use to help people who have been through chemotherapy.
“I think it is especially hard for women to lose their eyebrows, eyelashes and hair and if I can help make them feel better at such a traumatic time then I will be happy to do what I can.
“At the minute we have an HD kit for drawing on lashes which we can train people to use and we can do skin patch tests to ensure it is compatible with whatever treatment they are receiving.
“The brow is drawn on with a high quality charcoal which goes on to look like little hairs and which is rain proof and very effective.”
For people with paler complexions, or blondes who want a less extreme look there is a paler tint which creates the high-definition brow look, but with a more delicate finish. HD Brows take about an hour to create and last for about six weeks, depending on your hair growth.
At home maintenance is minimal, and there is very little upkeep between visits to the salon.
Anna will also visit your home to do HD Brow parties for groups of two or more.

Seven steps to a younger look
- – assessing your face shape, colouring and natural brows to determine the best result for you.
- – tinting of all brow hairs including the “fluffy” ones around the brows so that the consultant has the maximum to work with to get the best shape.
- – waxing both above and below the brows. Using the HD Brown guidelines to achieve the famous HD shape but tailored to suit you.
- – threading of the fluffy hairs surrounding the brows so they blend into the hairline.
- – tweezing to perfectly fine tune your shape.
- – trimming of any long hairs so that all of your brow hairs lie perfectly in their newly defined shape.
- – aftercare: some people will need a small amount of eyebrow pencil or powder to fill in any gaps while regrowth of any previous over plucked areas takes place. Brow beater is then applied to set your new brows in place.
