Jean genie: It's time to take a fresh look at style staple denim

The classic denim look has been given a fresh twist by designers, as Maureen Coleman finds out about the best looks

It's the most versatile fabric in fashion and a recurring trend every season, never dating or going out of style. But sometimes even the classics need a fresh twist and this year denim is back with new textures, shades and silhouettes.

Designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Tommy Hilfiger stayed true to blue, sending lots of denim looks down the catwalk while at Gucci, the spring/summer collection had a sprinkling of denim pieces.

This season's jeans have shorter hems and wider legs, with plenty of patched and distressed denim filtering down to the high street. Look out for boyfriend-style fits and flashy embellishments.

The ultra-tailored shirt dress returns too, while jackets and shirts are given the bleached treatment. Skirts are pencil or skater style, while denim dresses come in a variety of shapes and styles, from babydoll to bandeau.

And it's not just about the blues, with grey, white and pastel hues making a splash for spring/summer.
