Northern Ireland beauty expert Paddy McGurgan shares his top tips and favourite products for keeping your make-up in place on holiday
Whether you’re heading for a weekend in Portrush or a sunny trip abroad, like most of my clients, then you’ll want to look selfie-ready for your holiday pictures and will need beauty products that will withstand rain, hail or shine.
I’ve put together a waterproof routine to ensure your make-up lasts all day, no matter what your summer break involves...
For your first step, you should try the NARS Radiance Primer (£29) which is great for achieving one of this season’s biggest beauty trends — fresh, glowing skin. This is a fantastic product to apply before make-up for that lit-from-within look or on its own for those days when you want to go make-up free but want your skin to look refreshed.
If you have next-to-perfect skin, then one, we can’t be friends anymore (kidding, kind of) and two, you’ll prefer a thin, water-based, practically undetectable foundation like the Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation (£17.50). Since it’s waterproof, the sheer glow the foundation leaves behind will stay just how you like it (i.e. dewy, not shiny) all day long.
I recommend Urban Decay’s All Nighter Concealer (£20) because, well, the clue’s in the name! This product is a highly-pigmented, waterproof concealer that applies smoothly for a full coverage, matte finish and is very long-lasting.
From the first use, you can tell why Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer (£26) is an award-winning product. Its main feature is the soft, blendable formula which leaves a matte and seamless finish. This bronzer leaves a very natural look on the skin, making it perfect for summer selfies.
The best things in life make you blush! This includes Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush (£25) which will wear flawlessly throughout the day, thanks to the long-wearing, Amazonian clay formula. This powder is soft and silky and jam-packed with true-colour mineral pigments which means you can build your blush without harsh lines or a chalky appearance.
I suggest setting your base with Laura Mercier’s Loose Setting Powder (£30). I know the price might seem a bit steep for a powder, however it truly works wonders. The finely milled, weightless formula is practically invisible on the skin and instantly blurs imperfections, pores, fine lines and wrinkles, without that dreaded cakey look.
Much like a face primer, prepping your eyelids before applying product is crucial. I recommend the NYX Proof It Waterproof Eye Shadow Prime (£6) as the formula ensures eye shadows cling to the lid and never crease in the heat.
Add depth and definition to your eyes with Illamasqua’s Cream Pigment (£18) which has been developed with a crease-proof and water-resistant formula. These long-wearing, matte eye shadows glide on without effort.
Try Make Up Studio’s Mascara 3D (£16.50) for a water and sweat-proof formula that provides a false eyelash effect. A little goes a really long way — one layer provides the lashes with extra length, volume, curl and deep colour.
If you just can’t give up your liquid liner, try Rimmel London’s Exaggerate Waterproof Liquid Liner (£5.29) which is smudge, flake and smear-proof, meaning you can keep your statement look throughout your holiday, even at the pool.
For brows that don’t come off in the water (what a nightmare!) I would definitely pick up the Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow (£19.95, Make Up Pro Store). This product is a waterproof eyebrow corrector that can fill, define and lengthen brows. One of my pet hates as a make-up artist is brow products that slowly start to slide throughout the day, but the Aqua Brow really has that desired longevity.
Consider Maybelline’s Super Matte Lip (£9.99) as a tattoo for your lips, but without any of the pain, maintenance, cost and regrets. This product is highly-pigment and has impressive staying-power.
