Make-up masterclass: Top tips for achieving the beauty queen look
Paddy McGurgan is one of NI's best-known beauty experts and each week he tells us all we need to know about the latest make-up techniques and trends
On Monday, May 6, Miss Northern Ireland 2019 held ts grand final in the Europa Hotel, Belfast. I always love to see the style and fashion of the night, but most importantly I was so excited to see all the amazing make-up styles on display.
I am going to discuss how you can easily achieve your own 'beauty queen' look, suitable for day or night.
The most important aspect to focus on will be your skin. If your skin is in good condition, it's more likely that your complexion products will look flawless when applied. Of course, skincare is entirely personalised and should be tailored to your skin type and its needs. However, one of many hero products I would recommend would be the Skinician Pro-radiance Enzyme Peel (£29).
This product has a powerful blend of Alpha Hydroxy Acids and fruit enzymes that work together to remove dry cells from the skin's surface, promoting skin renewal and brightening, resulting in a more youthful and even complexion.
Next up is primer. Miss Northern Ireland 2019 will be working long hours, rushing from job to job and will need a primer that will last throughout her busy day. Ensuring you have a skin type specific primer will not only help your make-up last longer, but should correct any areas of issues in your complexion.
For added radiance to your skin, try Make Up Studio's Shimmer Effects in shade Champagne (£17.50). This is the perfect colour for anyone with a light-medium tan as it adds a gentle rose gold shimmer to the skin. Simply apply on the outer sections of the skin.
It's not always glamorous being a beauty queen - it can involve extensive days and long meet-and-greets. Just like Miss Northern Ireland, you can counteract the signs of tiredness - dark circles and puffy or dehydrated eyes - using an under eye concealer. Avoid applying concealer in a thick layer as this will only pack the skin full of product. This will dry harshly into your under eye area, which is up to five times thinner in texture than the rest of your skin.
For a lightweight concealer try the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (£24).
The creamy forumla is perfect for a quick and easy application, making it ideal for a busy lady on the go. Pro tip: Use a fluffy eye-shadow brush to apply concealer under the eye - this will smooth the product seamlessly onto the skin and will also prevent you from packing on too much product.
Similar to skincare products, your choice of foundation is a personal preference - I don't believe there is a one-size-fits-all foundation. This is one of the main reasons that when I opened my Make Up Pro Stores, I couldn't stick to only one brand. So many brands and cosmetic houses create such beautiful formulas for so many different people and skin types.
Beauty queens usually have foundations that look natural on the skin with a medium-to-full coverage to ensure all day wear. Whether it be for a charity fundraiser event or a Press call, these ladies need to be photo ready, and a foundation that is equally as photo ready. One of my all-time favourite foundations would be the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation (£30).
I adore the pigment of this foundation as it takes minimal product to build your coverage preference. I also love how natural it appears on the skin. I believe that wearing a full coverage foundation does not necessarily mean you need to be caked with make-up. Simply spend more time blending the product into your skin to achieve a natural, full coverage look.
Applying powder is such an important step if you want to achieve a long-wearing look. Powder will not only help matify your skin, but will help ensure your foundation lasts throughout the day. I recommend using the NYX Professional Makeup Studio Finishing Powder - Translucent (£9).
It's a miracle in a jar! This is a 100% pure mineral silica finishing powder that is perfect for setting your foundation or wearing alone. The luminous white powder goes on neutral and works on all skin tones. It leaves your skin looking radiant and luminous. Pro tip: Do not apply excessive amounts of powder to your skin as this will ruin the dew and natural glow you have worked so hard to create. Simply dust onto areas that need small amounts of matifying.
Blush products are brilliant for brightening a tired, dull complexion because they add a flush of colour to the skin. For this, I love the NARS blusher in the shade Orgasm (£25). Their blushers are really finely milled, so they build beautifully on the skin without creating a harsh strike of colour on the face.
Now your complexion is complete, it's time for your eyes. To create a Miss World approved eye look - which means no cut creases - work on your blending technique. To achieve a soft, beautiful and personalised look, I suggest buying bespoke palettes, created just for you. For this I recommend Make Up Studio Eyeshadow Refills (£11).
Beauty queens usually like to add warmth to the eye, so try eye-shadows numbers 28, 101P and 424. These are beautiful warm tones and will help create the perfect smokey eye. To complete your eye look, try the Lola Mega Volume Mascara (£12), "the best kept secret of beauty professionals across Europe".
Three top tips for perfecting the royal look
1. Use a pressed powder to add extra coverage and combat shine in excessively oily areas.
2. Lip gloss is your friend. It will complete your effortless, freshed-face make-up look.
3. Use an organic/natural setting spray, for example Mario Badescu Aloe Herb and Rosewater Spray to help keep your make-up on longer. It will also add a nourishing, hydrating effect to the skin.
