MTV’s hits and misses on the red carpet

Who wore it best at the MTV EMA bash in Belfast on Sunday night? Laura McGarrity asks fashionista Cathy Martin to cast a critical eye.

Ok, so one chap famously turned up wearing nothing, but that just wasn’t an option for the female stars at the MTV EMAs in Belfast.

Mind you, practically everything else was, as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Jessie J — and the odd supermodel — took to the red carpet in a fabulous array of outfits.

Who was a surefire hit? And who was a miss?

We sought the counsel of Belfast Fashionweek organiser Cathy Martin ... and the votes are in.

Host for the night, actress and singer Selena Gomez (19) wore a cream Marchesa mini-dress with a see-through back which is supposed to be worn as a top, according to Cathy. Her verdict? “Although it is a top, I thought the shape and the lace suited Selena, I loved it.”

Alas, Lady Gaga's memorable meat dress did not make an appearance in Belfast — nor did the much-rumoured Ulster Fry version — but the four-time EMA winner didn’t disappoint. Her figure-hugging chainmail dress was one of many Paco Rabanne outfits on the night.

“Lady Gaga is never practical and some of her dresses were a bit ridiculous,” concedes Cathy. “Plus, the headpieces meant she couldn't see ... and yet when she was performing on stage she looked amazing.” Though best known for extravagant showgirl outfits, Katy Perry decided to channel a more rockabilly look in Belfast.

Presumably she also decided to make the most of her pink locks, with a pink studded leather jacket over a pink dress in a sunglasses print.

“Katy's jacket was by Jeremy Scott and I loved it,” says Cathy.

“I wasn't too sure about her dress, but the jacket made up for it.”

Essex-born pop star Jessie J showed her enviable figure in a strapless leopard print Dolce and Gabanna dress — a winner for Cathy.

“I fell in love with Jessie J this weekend — yellow is a hard colour to pull off, especially with pale skin, but Jessie looked great,” she says. “The catsuits she wore on stage were nuts, but great to perform in.”

Supermodels Irina Shayk and Bar Rafaeli oozed sex appeal. Ms Rafaeli wore a wet-look black mini dress with a long train — a nod to this season’s key mullet style.

Ms Shayk wore a black leather dress, split to the thigh. “She was obviously going for the Kim Kardashian sexy look,” says Cathy. “But while the dress was nice, it wasn't anything new or different.”

Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere hit the red carpet in a monochrome capped sleeve dress. Again, a “could do better” report card from Cathy: “Very pretty, but nothing startling.”
