Sarah Burton too busy to wear Alexander McQueen
Sarah Burton says she’s often too “busy” to wear Alexander McQueen dresses.
The British designer was appointed creative director of the label last May, following the suicide of Alexander – whose full name was Lee Alexander McQueen. After a turbulent past few months Sarah confirms she often misses out on the major perks of working in the fashion industry. She is adamant that people are more likely to see her altering a dress than wearing one.
“I’m often on the floor, pinning and fitting. I have so many amazing dresses from the past collections, but I rarely have the opportunity to wear them,” she told Vogue magazine.
Sarah’s diary has understandably been full as she attempts to revitalise a label shocked by the premature death of its creator. Sarah, who was extremely close to Alexander, revealed how she tried to inject her personality into future shows without losing the essence of the designer.
“I wanted the catwalk to be intimate, to be about the craftsmanship, the designs. People ask: What’s Sarah about? But I’ve worked here for so long, there’s been a big part of me in those collections along the way. I’m not going to wipe the slate clean. That would be wiping me away. There will always be those McQueen elements, but at the same time, you can never truly stay still and you have to stay true to yourself,” she added.
