The dresses that stole show at Golden Globes

By Helen Carson

The red carpet winners - Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Paris Hilton - and losers - mumsy Kate Winslet.

The Golden Globes ceremony is as much a showcase for fashion as it is for film, with A-list actresses taking to the red carpet in considerable style.

But even with megabucks movie deals and stylists showering them with their latest creations, many goddesses of the silver screen looked more hellish than heavenly at this year’s ceremony on Monday.

Actress Salma Hayek stole the show in a glitzy, figure-hugging floor-length gown with sparkling cascading pleats, and a daring top half embroidered in shimmering gold. Like many others, Salma showed off her buxom figure to great effect.

Nicole Kidman looked really beautiful in a stunning nude column dress embellished in gold, and led the charge for light-coloured dresses. Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon embraced old Hollywood glamour with a sexy red strapless figure-hugging frock with fishtail.

Golden Globe winner Madonna made an entrance with a Mermaid-style dress. The tight sequin-encrusted number flared out to a jade green ribbon-effect full skirt.

And the world’s most famous heiress, Paris Hilton, looked chic in a gold one-shoulder evening dress cinched to one bejewelled side for a full-on glamour effect.

Downton Abbey may have taken an award on the night, but oh Lady Mary! What a fright! Actress Michelle Dockery looked rather plain and was virtually unrecognisable in a rather dull black and blue strapless gown.

Rather out of her usual red carpet character, Kate Winslet made waves for all the wrong reasons in a mumsy black and white number that looked more catalogue than couture.

You would expect, though, an acclaimed actress such as Meryl Streep to have the red carpet displays down to a T by now. Instead, the formidable Streep, who plays Mrs Thatcher in the Iron Lady, looked like she’d forgotten her rhinestones and stetson with a cowboy-inspired ensemble. The hideous black shirt dress with a billowing skirt and ’70s-style elasticated belt did nothing for this lady — who should have fired her stylist. Even Mrs T wouldn’t have made such a fashion faux pas back in the day!
