Watch: Splash of colour for Belfast FashionWeek launch

Catwalks to come alive with gentler tones in 2018

By Claire McNeilly

Lilacs, pinks, sage greens and powder blues will be firmly on the fashionista's palette this spring and summer, as West Coast Cooler FashionWeek celebrates its silver 'anniversary'.

The launch of its 25th season at the Ormeau Baths in Belfast on Thursday brought a splash of colour to a dull and dreary January day, with fashion fans scribbling key dates in their diaries.

Scheduled for March 22-25, with nightly catwalk shows, not to mention the return of Sushi Saturday and Style Sunday, this four-day fashion festival continues to dominate the style stakes.

Expect sell-out high street and designer runway shows, once again at the stunning St Anne's Cathedral venue, but this year FashionWeek will step out of Belfast for the first time and head for The Outlet in Banbridge too.

Event director Cathy Martin praised the "incredible creative talent on our doorstep in Northern Ireland" and said she was keen to see how local retailers and designers showcase the new trends.

"We'll see oodles of pastels and dusty tones which were prevalent on the catwalk at Victoria Beckham and Versace - lilac, pink, sage green and powder blue are definitely the chosen colours for this gentle season," she said.

"There will also be a nod towards the Eighties and Nineties, as fashion gets nostalgic with dramatic silhouettes and total texture clashes like those we saw at Gucci and Stella McCartney. "Also going nowhere for SS18, logomania and athleisure return with a glamorous makeover - think sequins, flattering silhouettes and nipped waistlines on T-shirts and slouchy silk pants."

Shows will include collections from several boutiques and designers including Lover of Luxe, Nor Lisa, as well as staples Jourdan, Blush and Grainne Maher.

The style team will also show the top picks from the high street and online, including Boux Avenue, Remus Uomo, Designers at Debenhams and Zara, plus ASOS, Boohoo, M&S, Next and TopShop as well as French Connection, Karen Millen and Jigsaw.

Brand manager Laura Shiels from title sponsor West Coast Cooler said: "The event celebrates individuality, creativity and talent and that is something we are passionate about."

The show schedule is available at with links to all participant retailers and sponsors.
