All the best: James McGinn on his favourite things

By Kerry McKittrick

The 51-year-old is the general manager of the Europa Hotel in Belfast. He says:

My best moment

December 20 in 2015, when I had the most incredible surprise 50th birthday with all of my brothers and sisters. A very good friend organised it - I thought I was going to the Sports Personality of the Year Awards until I walked into Harlem Cafe in Belfast and everyone was there. I had no idea.

My best song

Around Christmas time it's Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, but every other time of year it's Bring Them Home from Les Miserables, sung by either Josh Groban or Alife Boe. I love musical theatre, and Les Mis is my favourite. It's a very spiritual song.

My best way to relax

Usually a bit of exercise, such as yoga or running, on a Sunday. Afterwards I might have a spa treatment - not many men will say this, but I love spa treatments. I'm at the Culloden spa about three or four times a week.

My best job

I've been with Hastings Hotels for 20 years now, having started at the Europa in 1996 as a quality development manager. I went on to become manager of the Stormont Hotel, then the Culloden, and I've now been general manager of the Europa for 13 years. I do find myself wondering why I work 12 hours a day, six days a week, but when it's in you, it's in you. I can't imagine life without this job, it's something of a calling. My best single event was transforming the hotel into a three-storey nightclub for the MTV Video awards in 2011. While I had the biggest budget it was my most ambitious event to stage... but also the moment of my life.

My best advice

Be exactly who you are and never feel alone. My dad told me that.

My best movie

Schindler's List. I am fascinated with the Holocaust and how people were treated by the Nazis. I visited the two camps when I was in Krakow. I love going to the cinema. Most Friday nights I try to finish work at 7pm, then have a bite to eat with my friend, Heather, and then we walk to the Movie House on the Dublin Road.

My best gift

A wonderful Ken Hamilton painting which was a Christmas present. I love collecting paintings, and Ken Hamilton specialises in portraits, mostly of women. I have one called Rebecca, and it's so rich in detail.

My best achievement

Being in this job for 13 years and managing to gather a great team in that time. We all work very well together.

My best buy

A multi-fuel stove. It sounds boring, but I adore it and it has transformed my house into a proper home.

My best book

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. Again, it's going back to the Holocaust and the life lessons to be learned. That is closely followed by The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
