All the best: Trainer Shane McGuigan's favourite things

By Kerry McKittrick

The 28-year-old is the son of former featherweight world champion boxer Barry McGuigan and trainer to world champion boxers Carl Frampton and David Haye. He lives in London with his wife, Sophie. He says:

My best moment

My wedding in Majorca last September. It's been a bit crazy, though, as I had to spend four weeks in Las Vegas before the Carl Frampton flight and, because of other training commitments, we still haven't had a honeymoon yet.

My best song

Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye. I love the old soul music, and there's no one better at it than him.

My best way to relax

As a trainer I'm constantly going from one fight to another, as well as training camps, and it can be quite stressful. I like unwinding by going for a nice long walk with Sophie - either that or reading a book. I like the simple things after a hectic period, and a walk is good-quality time without social media.

My best job

I worked in a gym in London as a personal trainer and fitness adviser, and I made a lot of good contacts. This enabled me to start my own fitness facility. I trained the now retired English cricketer Freddie Flintoff for four months for a professional fight that was filmed for a documentary. It was good fun and helped establish my reputation in the fitness industry. Now I'm working with big-name fighters, but there's nothing I like more than seeing guys come in off the street and enjoying the facilities of my gym.

My best advice

My dad always used to say to me, train hard and fight easy... and don't believe your own hype because it doesn't matter how big a personality or star you become, you still need a good team around you. Carl Frampton's like that - he's still the same person from Tigers Bay that he always was. While he's world-famous now and has enough money to retire, he hasn't changed a bit.

My best film

Step Brothers with Will Ferrell and John C Reilly, which is about two men forced to live together as brothers. I love comedies and this one has plenty of slapstick in it. Funny films remind me not to take myself too seriously.

My best gift

When Sophie and I started going out, she got me a nice necklace, which I treasure.

My best achievement

When I was awarded the Boxing Writers' of America Trainer of the Year in 2016 and the British Boxing Board of Control Trainer of the Year 2016 awards, which were both pretty special. Also seeing Carl Frampton become a two-weight champion in New York was phenomenal. I was the youngest ever boxing coach of a world champion.

My best buy

My Kindle. I try and educate myself on strength and nutrition all of the time. Being able to store all my books in one place is really handy, particularly when I'm travelling.

My best book

The Paleo Diet: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Foods You Were Designed to Eat by Loren Cordain. It's a great book and a great link for me as fitness ambassador for Centra. Everyone should read it. When I started getting into nutrition, this was an important book and the one I've based all my ideas on.
