All the best: we talk to Q Radio presenter Ibe Sesay

We ask local celebrities what are their most favourite

The 35-year-old presents Belfast’s Q Radio each weekday afternoon from 1pm-4pm. He lives in Lisburn with his wife Colleen, a make-up artist, and their children, Katie (13), Molly (10), Stephen (6) and Daniel (5).

My best moment

That would be a choice between when my children were born and my wedding day — and my wedding day wins out. We got married in 2008 and had our do at the Ramada at Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast. It was a big wedding because I have lots of family. It was a great day, apart from the fact it poured out of the heavens from start to finish — but they say that’s good luck at a wedding.

My best way to relax

I get to relax very rarely — I have four kids and work a lot of nights in clubs and bars as well as the radio show. To relax, I like a nice night in with a good meal and a bottle of wine while watching something on the TV. That is the perfect way to unwind.

My best song

Hands down, my all-time favourite song is Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror. I’m a huge fan of Jackson and I love the lyrics of this song. I saw him perform it live in Dublin in 1993 and was blown away.

My best advice

That’s a hard one, but my mum always told me that it’s nice to be nice and that it will always come back to you if you are. That would be a motto that I try to live by.

My best job

I haven’t always worked in radio — I trained as a mechanic — but I love what I do now. I love entertaining and speaking to a lot of people on a daily basis. When I get calls, it feels as though the person on the other end of the phone has known me forever. I like the familiarity of radio.

My best gift

It wasn’t so much the gift as the thought that counted for this one. I was aged about 13 or 14 and I was having a bit of a hard time at home because my parents had split up. My Uncle Joe saw that I wasn’t coping well and he gave me his Ray-Ban sunglasses just to cheer me up and I still have them. It was a pretty cool thing for me to have at that age, but every time I look at them I know that someone was thinking about me.

My best buy

I bought a wireless Sonos speaker and I listen to it everywhere — I can play music from my phone and take it all round the house.

Best film

I do like films and I watch as many as possible when I want to unwind. I couldn’t choose between The Shawshank Redemption and Bad Boys with Will Smith — they’re two very different films, and I like each of them in different ways.

Best book

That would be Chris Evans’ autobiography It’s Not What You Think. He dispenses a lot of good advice, but also talks about how he started working in radio at an early age on the bottom rung. He went from making the tea to owning Virgin Radio, and it’s an incredible read.
