Anna back on the beat for hit TV drama

By Eddie McIlwaine

Admirers of the hit tv detective series Marcella, starring Anna Friel (39) in the title role of the troubled cop, will be delighted to learn that a new series of the drama - which has recently ended its first run - is already being written.

Which means that Anna will be back in a role that made her a favourite around the UK.

"Marcella is an emotional part to play and I need a long rest before shooting begins again," says the mum-of-one, who was born in Rochdale to dad Des Friel, a French teacher from Belfast, and mum Rosie, a special needs teacher.

Anna's tough-talking Marcella Blackland was dragged back in to the line of duty with the Metropolitan Police in the dramatic first episode of the ITV eight-parter to work on an unsolved murder. There are still loose ends to be tied up according to armchair critics.

You'll remember Anna from her run in Brookside, in which her character Beth Jordache exchanged a lesbian kiss with Nicola Stephenson and also ended up burying evil dad Trevor under the patio.

I actually used to meet her on sorties to the BBC in Belfast just before Anna was drafted into a meaty part in the movie Land Girls.
