Denise goes back to school for BBC drama

Actress Denise Gough plays a schoolteacher in a new BBC2 TV drama called Paula, now being filmed in Belfast... and she warns it is a chilling tale about a young couple who become locked in a dance of mutual destruction.

"There is an animalistic spark of attraction between them, but only one can survive," she says. "I play Paula, who is a complex woman, in this three-parter by filmmaker Conor McPherson."

The 37-year-old, from Co Clare, won a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in the play People, Places and Things, and was a village mother once upon a time in Robin Hood.

She has also been in BBC TV hospital soaps Holby City and Casualty and has appeared in several films, including The Kid. I particularly remember her in The Duchess of Malfi on television.

Co-starring with her in Paula, which will hit TV screens in late summer, are Tom Hughes (Victoria and The Game) and Owen McDonnell (Spooks).
