Glitter parting, glitter bum, glitter boobs... there have been some truly bizarre sparkle-based trends in the last couple of years - and if you wouldn't be caught dead trying any of them, you're not alone.

But there is something delightful about shimmery, shining speckles when they're used in a subtle way, and that's exactly what's been happening on the catwalks in recent seasons.

From punky dark sparkles to shimmering lips, these gorgeous looks will make you want to grab the glitter ASAP.

Inspired by the designer shows, here are four ways to try the trend...

1. Alberta Ferretti

At Alberta Ferretti, black eyeliner with a slight feline flick was paired with holographic sparkle.

Black kohl pencil is key to create this look (rather than liquid liner), and should be applied generously under the lower lashes and on the waterline. Smudge it, then dab the glitter on your lids and finish with lots of black mascara.

2. Ashish

Backstage at Ashish, make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench, working on behalf of MAC, said she was inspired by: "Ancient Hindu culture, when people drew black kohl around the eyes to ward off evil spirits, amped up with a reflective twist."

To take this look from the runway to real life, use a dark grey eyeshadow to create a smokey ring around the eyes, softening the edges with a blending brush, then add a hint of glitter on the lid and inner corner.

3. Ryan Lo

"Angelic and youthful" was how Ffrench described the girls at Ryan Lo, where she used very long false eyelashes and glue to attach a generous helping of pale pink glitter.

But there is an easier way to recreate this look: Let your regular mascara dry then add a glitter topcoat.

4. Shrimps

"Waking up in a floral garden with the fresh morning dew on their skin, still sporting a partied-out glitter lip," was the brief at Shrimps, according to make-up artist Lucy Burt, who used tiny sequin-like particles, rather than fine-milled sparkles.

Obviously this isn't an everyday sort of look, but it's perfect for a festival or party. Well-hydrated lips are key here, so slather on lip balm then follow with a lip gloss or liquid colour that the flecks will stick to.
