It's no surprise that home gym equipment sales have soared in the UK during the coronavirus lockdown. With people concerned about going to the gym while others have had limited ability to travel outside their homes, many have finally kick-started a regular workout routine at home.

And this is when Limavady man Colin Montgomery, a management consultant, saw a gap in the market.

He says: "I used to exercise a lot, in either corporate or private gyms. A few years ago, when my consultancy role became too busy and had me working from multiple client locations, I almost completely stopped exercising.

"I bought some free weights, a Swiss ball, some resistance bands and other equipment, but they all ended up spread throughout our flat. Every time I wanted to exercise, it took me ages to pull everything together and it had to be squeezed in between the furniture, and ultimately the result was that I still wasn't exercising."

It was last year that Colin started to think about what he could do to overcome this problem to exercising at home: the lack of a usable space. And this is when he came up with the idea of the PIVOT Bed. "Space in most homes is at a premium and can be the biggest hurdle to exercising at home," says Colin, who now lives in London with his wife Patricia and one-month-old daughter Sophie.

"A larger property was out of the question so I looked at freeing up space at home. We have a spare bedroom so this was the main focus and I quickly thought to swap the bed for a wall bed. I then thought: why not make a wall bed which is massively strong, lockable in the upright position and has integrated exercise equipment?

"I started sketching, discussed ideas with my father who has some engineering qualifications and experience, and contracted a local metal fabricator to make me a wall bed, which I could then adapt.

"By March I had finished the prototype and it worked so well that I was exercising almost every day now that I had a great space to work out. By the end of March, my 'new' job had become my old job as I felt compelled to follow my gut and make PIVOT Bed into a product I could sell. I taught myself 3D modelling and started working with a metal fabrication company, and now, a few months later, we have a fantastic pre-production model which can be flat-packed and shipped."

A former pupil of Limavady Grammar School and graduate of Queen's University, Colin founded PIVOT Fitness with Patricia and their good friends David Middlemiss and Rob Feeley. Prior to founding the company, Colin worked with management consultancy McKinsey and Company, helping their international clients form digital start-ups.

The PIVOT Bed, which launches on Kickstarter.com next Tuesday, converts into a home gym in a matter of seconds. The clever design lets you pivot the bed up to a locked, stable and self-supporting position and get stuck straight into your workout using pull-up and dip bars and a power rack built into the bedframe. The workout mat and any other equipment are stored in the free space under the bed. And lifting the bed is easy, thanks to integrated gas struts which take the majority of the weight.

"We're now looking forward to launching our Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the project, where backers can get their hands on the product for less than half price," Colin adds.

You can support the PIVOT Fitness crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.com between November 3 and December 11 this year and receive one of the first models of this groundbreaking new home exercise solution at a fraction of its 2021 retail price. https://pvt.fit
