Life is full of uncertainties... just ask Boris or Cameron

Thought for the weekend

By Rev Gareth Burke

So, everyone thought that England would beat Iceland. Everyone thought that Boris Johnson would enter the Conservative leadership contest. Everyone thought that Iceland would make an early exit from the Euros. But everyone got it wrong. Just goes to prove things don't always work out as we imagine. This is true not only regarding 'big events', but true also in our own personal lives. We have our own aspirations and plans and ideas for our futures. We chart out where we want to be in five years' time. We plan for marriage, a secure job, a comfortable future, but it doesn't always work out as planned. Life is full of uncertainties.

Recently, we entered a time of turmoil and uncertainty in the life of our nation. For many of us, perhaps for the first time in our lives, we felt somewhat insecure and even a little fearful as to what was going to happen and how we would personally be affected economically or otherwise by all the upheaval that was going on. Confusion, uncertainty and even fear were our companions.

For those who have a living faith in Christ, who are trusting in him for salvation, there is help and comfort to be found in the Bible, God's Word. At times like this, we can remind ourselves of some things that are definite and sure. Ponder these unshakeable truths, and as you ponder them may God reassure your fearful heart and give you something of his peace.

"O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no-one can withstand you." 2 Chronicles 20:6

"Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." Psalm 90:1

"I the Lord, do not change." Malachi 3:6

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

"The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity." Psalm 93:1-3
