Me and my health: MLA Megan Fearon on her lifestyle

By Helen Carson

The 25-year-old is a Sinn Fein MLA for Newry and Armagh and junior health minister in the Executive who lives in Dromintee, south Armagh. She recently took part in the Belfast Telegraph Runher Titanic event.

Q: Do you take regular exercise - and if so what?

A: I do weight training three times a week and try to mix in a few hill sprints or interval training at the same time. I've being doing weights for about three years now and before that I used to play camogie and football. Recently I took part in the Belfast Telegraph Runher 5km. It was my first race so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I loved it and now I'm keen to better my time.

Q: What's the worst illness you have had?

A: Currently I'm nursing a broken finger from a gym-related incident. I've also had mumps, shingles and chicken pox - unfortunately I've had them all twice.

Q: How healthy is your diet?

A: Pretty healthy as I eat lots of fruit and veg. While I try to limit carbs, I do love bread and pasta. I drink three litres of water a day and luckily I don't have a sweet tooth. A Chinese or Indian takeaway at the weekend is a treat, though.

Q: Any bad habits?

A: Too much coffee and occasionally skipping breakfast.

Q: Do you drink and/or smoke - if so, how much?

A: I don't smoke, but I do drink although not during the week or at home. To be honest I'm happy to be the driver, but if I'm out without the car, red wine or gin would be my tipples of choice.

Q: Do you take any health supplements?

A: I'm anaemic so I take magnesium, zinc and multi-vitamins. I also eat a lot of spinach for iron and take vitamin D, peppermint oil capsules, fish oils and turmeric. For me medicine is a last resort - you can probably tell I prefer natural remedies.

Q: How do you take time out?

A: I enjoy hiking and walking. Slieve Gullion is on my doorstep and is my favourite place in the world. You can see nine counties from the top on a clear day. I also love travelling and try to visit new places when I can - my most recent visit was Krakow. Reading is another favourite and I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction. I'm currently reading Moranifesto by Caitlin Moran.

Q: How well do you sleep?

A: Not that well - I don't tend to sleep more than six hours a night. Exercise helps me sleep though.

Q: Do you worry about getting old?

A: No, I try not to worry about things that are out of my control.

Q: What is your go-to product/habit that keeps you feeling healthy?

A: A Supergreens drink every day which has the nutrients of 10 portions of fruit and veg. It's great for boosting your energy. My lifestyle is pretty busy these days so I'm not always in to cook something healthy - I feel better for having this. It's also really important to take care of our mental health and a friend of mine is a mindfulness coach so I've also taken a few tips from her. Before bed I take half an hour to sit without my phone or the television and just reflect with a cup of camomile or peppermint tea which helps me to wind down. She has also introduced me into colouring books for adults which I'm now a fan of.
