Stories of a hundred inspiring women that aren't just for the children to read
kids' book of the week
Once upon a time there were two young women, who were fed up with the same old stories that girls were told about princesses who sat around waiting for the boys to come back from slaying dragons.
So, they decided to do something about it. Having tried to raise money from investors to set up a children's media company, they were told their idea was no good.
So, they launched campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo and raised over a million US dollars.
The result is this book, which tells the story of 100 extraordinary women from around the world, including Jane Austen, Malala and Cleopatra.
Each story is told in the manner of a bedtime story, many starting "Once upon a time ...", telling the exploits of each particular heroine in her own sphere, from activist and astrophysicist to Warrior Queens.
The book is beautifully illustrated by 60 women artists, with a full-page portrait of each woman included.
It's not just one for the girls, read it to the boys, too, so they know exactly how brilliant the female half of the population can be - especially when they have to fight for what is right.
And parents might learn a thing or two, as well.
