The price is right for Christmas cosmetics

Brush up on festive beauty this year with dazzling make-up that won't be too hard on your bank balance

By Helen Carson

Step away from the nude lipgloss ... it's party time, so break out the bold red lippy and glimmering nail polish and be the belle of the Christmas ball.

Your credit card need not take a pounding, though, when it comes to glamming up for yuletide outings.

Some of our favourite stores now have their own cosmetic ranges to rival the big brands ... but at a fraction of the cost.

From shimmering eye-shadow palettes to precision eyeliner tools, gorgeous mascaras, brow kits and professional-quality brushes - most of which are less than a tenner. Christmas really has come early when it comes to incredible long-lasting beauty buys.

M&S has its own beauty department now which is a tempting mix of big brands to its own ranges including Autograph and more - and the trusty high street brand has been quick to turn round current trends and make them their own. Fresh on the shelves is Autograph Air Cover Cushion Foundation with SPF 20 - the air cushion technology is the "it" beauty product of the moment, and priced at £16 the M&S version looks sleek, comes in a variety of shades and will offer a flawless complexion for evenings out.

Professional make-up brushes undoubtedly improve application, but they can be pricey. BHS has an entire range called Lottie - from foundation to bronzer and beauty blender - and the shadow brush costs a fiver. A worthy investment for looking your best.

And for some Kardashian-style contouring, you don't have to be super rich like Kim and her sisters. New Look has a fantastic Contour Kit (£5.99) which has all the necessary shades to hit the red carpet in - without the LA price tag.

For a smokey eye, the Autograph Colour Luxe Mono Eyeshadow in Pewter (£7) adds drama to your look without draining your resources. But it just wouldn't be Christmas without some sparkle, and the Next has a really compact Glitter Eye Quad (£7.50) with four really wearable shades and that all-important shimmer. The Sparkle Eyeshadow palette (£14), Accessorize is also a festive must-have for perky peepers.

Meanwhile, Autograph All in One Nail Colour in Cranberry adds a welcome dollop of Cringle-style colour to nails. You can also save money on a manicure with Primark's fun Emoji Nail Files (£2, four-pack). And you can trust Accessorize to come up with the perfect finishing touches with their Party Dress Nail Polish (£5).

Perfect your pout for lots of Mistletoe action thanks to New Look's Matte Liquid Lip Colour (£3.99) and Pure Lip Liner (£1.99). Accessorize also has a lovely Light Me Up Lip Gloss (£6) in stunning shades.

Getting a statement eye is easy with Barry M's Waterproof Gel Eyeliner (£5.49) Boots, Superdrug, chemists and supermarkets - it's foolproof to apply and lasts and lasts. And beautifying your brows need not be time consuming with Take Me Brow shaper (£7) from Accessorize. Finally, finish your look sweep on Rimmel Lash Accelerator (£7.99), Boots, Superdrug, chemists and supermarkets for luscious lashes all night long. After a fun-filled evening, though, you may want to have a supply of Cooling Eye Masks (£4.50), from Oliver Bonas).
