This New Year, boldly go where you've never gone

By Joseph Pond

Happy New Year! The promise of a new beginning is always galvanising. If you have something you'd like to accomplish in the next 12 months, I have good news for you. First of all, you're not who you think you are. See, our brains have a tendency to find consistency where very little actually exists.

Take memory, for example. How do you remember the past? How do you remember to have bad habits, or to hold on to past transgressions? We tend to think our brains record events like a video camera, and every time we want to remember something we simply play that stored recording back. Not true, say memory experts. When you think you're remembering a past event, what you're really recalling is the last time you thought about that event, not the event itself.

If memories are really carbon copies of carbon copies, that means that whatever you thought your limitations were, you might be wrong. Perhaps our only true limitation is the illusion of consistency. Do you think you know yourself like the back of your hand? Think again - you've never seen that hand before in your life.

That's because the molecules that make up you are constantly changing. Not a single particle remains of who you were one year ago. The body you have while you're reading this has never existed before today, and it never will again. You are new. Literally, and scientifically, you are entirely a new person in the universe and there's nothing much holding you back except the need for consistency and some learned behaviour.

You've also never been here before. The earth revolves around the sun at a dizzying speed of 67,000 miles per hour, and our entire solar system swirls around the galaxy at some 490,000mph. Our entire galaxy is hurtling through the universe at about 1,000mph per second. Like the Starship Enterprise, you too are boldly going where no person has ever gone before. Make up the rules of this strange new world as you go along. Have an exciting 2017.
