Why I'm not green with envy over Rory's round with Trump
Does anyone really care about Rory McIlroy's round of golf with President Trump? There has been an inconsequential debate on the subject.
For me the only question, if there is a query at all, is whether our favourite sports person would have bothered to line up on the tee with Donald if he had lost the election and was still merely a billionaire with peculiar ideas.
As a journalist I'm always meeting personalities with star ratings. The two sports stars whose company I respected down the years were Sir Stanley Matthews and George Best and it was a pleasure to shake the hand of Princess Diana and have coffee with Luciano Pavarotti.
Most of the others I quickly forgot after an interview, nearly as quickly as they forgot me.
In hindsight, I always got on well with Sir Cliff Richard.
