In the world of fashion, there are celebrities who divide opinion (a certain family of reality TV stars, for example) and then there are the famous faces universally admired for their personal style.

Sarah Jessica Parker is one such individual, so you know that when the Sex And The City style icon decrees that cardigans are cool again, you better believe it's true.

The 54-year-old was recently spotted at a film screening in a slouchy cashmere cardigan from the knitwear brand Madeleine Thompson.

The button-down knit has found another Nineties TV star champion of late, in the form of Katie Holmes.

When the former Dawson's Creek actor was photographed wearing a matching cashmere cardigan and bra while hailing a taxi in New York, the photo went viral and fashion fans everywhere clamoured to find out where the items were from.

She also looked effortlessly cool in this chunky knit cardigan at a fashion show recently. Other stars seen out and about in versions of the beloved knit include Paris Jackson and French actress Berenice Bejo, of The Artist fame.

So now you want to join the cardi crew? Well, there are a few rules you'll need to follow.

First of all, this trend is all about relaxed cool, so your cardigan needs to be oversized and made from a chunky wool.

If it's boxy with a V-neck, all the better, rather than longline and snug.

Subdued colours are on-trend - think biscuit, oatmeal, ivory or soft peach - and are ideal for teaming with faded denim jeans, but go for bold patterns too and warm shades of rust and brown to fit in with the season.

As for what to wear it with, you could take your cue from Parker and Holmes and opt for a matching knitted bra or crop top, or wear it with nothing underneath, as you would a jumper.

Alternatively, layer your cardigan over an mannish white shirt for a relaxed but still cosy winter look.
