It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I absolutely love it, love it, love it! What’s not to love about Christmas?

The twinkling lights, cosy nights by the fire with the Christmas tree and candles, Christmas parties, meeting up with family and friends, presents, of course, and it is the ultimate excuse to indulge in some fabulous food and drink, maybe spending that little bit more and spoiling ourselves after another long hard year.

I love a Christmas dinner and try to cram in as many as possible in the run up to the big day. I also like to start earlier in the year gathering up some lovely wines to enjoy over the festive period and as our family is more than partial to a drop of fizz, I make sure I have a good supply.

Every festive meal, family gathering and party in our clan starts with some fizz, except breakfast, but I have learnt to rule nothing out!

I have three big hitters in the fizz department for you to try. Prosecco first, always a crowd pleaser and seemingly everyone’s favourite fizz at the moment but one of my personal favourites is Valdo Millesimato Prosecco DOC.

This is a delicious sparkler made from 100% Glera grapes from Treviso in Italy. It is a lovely straw yellow colour with an enticing fruity aroma, and hints of Golden Delicious apples. This fizz is classed as Extra Dry and has a clean-cut palate with aromatic flavours.

The bottle itself is very elegant and sure to impress. Check out the full Valdo range online or treat yourself to a Prosecco Flight in the classy Merchant Hotel in Belfast.

Now time for some Champagne which is traditionally made with three grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Champagne Deutz Brut Classic lives up to its name is reharded as the most eclectic of the Deutz range.

It has a wonderful golden colour and a lovely fine mousse, or bubbles. On the nose you get floral and fruity notes followed by aromas of marzipan of toast. Deutz Brut Classic is the perfect aperitif and will kick off your Christmas meal in style, but it is also the perfect accompaniment to fish dishes, poultry and white meats so can carry you through your smoked salmon or prawn starter with ease.

Now for a name most of us have heard of… Taittinger, The Brut Reserve is a blend of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier using wines from 35 different vineyards. The high proportion of Chardonnay which is unique among fine non-vintage champagnes, is what produces this delicately balanced champagne known all over the world for consistent excellence.

It is golden yellow in colour with fine and delicate bubbles and a light mousse. On the nose you get aromas of peaches, white flowers and that lovely brioche toastiness.

This is a Champagne for all occasions and perfect to celebrate the festive season. Look out for the beautiful gift box in a pearly metallic sheen containing a bottle of Taittinger Brut Reserve and two beautiful champagne flutes, which would make the perfect present to impress absolutely anyone. Available in The Vineyard, Belfast, The Sipster, Jordanstown and The Wine Company, Belfast. So, Happy Christmas everyone! Pop a cork and enjoy!  Cheers!
