A cheap bottle of own brand Spanish red has sold out of Aldi stores in England after it was championed at the International Wine and Spirit Competition last month.
Toro Loco Tempranillo 2011 defeated vintage wines costing eight times more in the contest where it was awarded a silver medal forcing managers of the budget supermarket to double its orders.
“We’ve never seen anything like it. We sold a months’ worth of Toro Loco Tempranillo in just three days,” Tony Baines of Aldi told the Daily Express.
Toro Loco Tempranillo beat off tough competition from higher priced rivals including Costa di Bussia Riserva DOCG which is sold at a more costly £31.15 per bottle.
