For him & her: The perfect couple on Valentine's Day
Paula Gracey checks out the perfect couple for Valentine’s Day
Staying in is the new going out.. yes, even on the most romantic night of the year.
Let’s face it, given the choice of pink-themed meals for two in over-priced, over-crowded restaurants (the worst are the ones that time limit you to ‘sittings’ so they can pack in twice as many), or being treated to a candlelit evening in, no taxis required, so I can kick off with my latest gin-based cocktail discovery (I have a gin for everything), then hand me my cocktail shaker.
This Valentine’s, I’ll be pouring up two new creations from our own Crossgar-based Rademon Estate Distillery, home of the famous Shortcross gin.
And since the collection is called ‘For Him & Her’, I suppose I will have to invite Him to join me.
We have resident Shortcross mixologist Mark McConville to thank for these fantastic combinations, not at all over the top, just the right blend of unique, deliciousness and pink. Each showcases one of Shortcross' limited edition gins - Bartender Series One and Cask Finish.
'For her' (ie: me) is created with Cask Finish, aka pink gin for grown-ups; a superior flavour infused from red wine Bordeaux Casks sweetened with Lanique, rosewater and strawberry compote to create a sweetness for your taste buds to enjoy.
'For Him', Bartender Series One is used and combined with Lychee Liqueur, Crème de Violette and Orange Bitters to create a sweet and bitter taste on the palette. He claims not to like gin, but watch him make short work of this one.
So, if you are hoping for a proposal this Valentine’s Day, make it decent one and get this couple together.
35ml Bartender Series Gin
15ml lychee liqueur
15ml Crème de Violette
2 dash orange bitters
10ml sugar syrup
To garnish: create the cross effect by lightly dropping Bitters to the foam top once cocktail is poured, add rose petal (optional)
40ml Cask Finished Gin
20ml strawberry compote
To garnish: set a single rose petal on top of the cocktail and fill lightly with elderflowers
