'I take vitamin B12 if I feel run down or need a boost'

Jolene O'Hara: Me & My Health

By Helen Carson

The 28-year-old actress, who plays Princess Jasmine in the Waterfront's Christmas panto Aladdin, lives in Belfast and is engaged to Ronan Marlowe, who is a lawyer.

Do you take regular exercise - and if so, what?

Until I started in panto, I trained to the Insanity DVD at home about four times a week. And Ronan and I enjoy going for walks.

What's the worst illness you have had?

Shingles when I was 11, and it was incredibly painful. I also suffer quite badly with my sinuses, which is not great when you are an actress and a singer. Thankfully I haven't had too much trouble with them this year since I started using sinus drench.

How healthy is your diet?

Not bad at all; I have granola for breakfast with yoghurt and blueberries, with a peanut butter seeded pitta for lunch, although I eat a lot more when I am training. Dinner will usually include sweet potatoes and vegetables. But I have, on occasions, been known to enjoy a fish finger sandwich with mayonnaise and mustard - delicious.

Any bad habits?

Sugar. When I am acting in performance for children I always take a big bucket of sweets with me for them... but there are never any drumsticks left because I eat them all. I love chewy sweets and toffees, too.

Do you drink and/or smoke - if so, how much?

I don't smoke but I do like to have a drink. My favourite tipple would be Jack Daniels, which I take either with ginger ale or water.

Do you take any health supplements?

Multivitamins every day and vitamin D, as we don't get a lot of sun here in Belfast. I will also take vitamin B12 every now and again if I am feeling run down or need an extra boost.

How do you take time out?

I am not good at having down time, but when I'm not working I like to be at home and put my feet up to watch Netflix. I enjoy films and series such as Stranger Things, Once Upon A Time, Falling Skies or any sci-fi.

How well do you sleep?

Usually quite well, although with panto season in full swing sometimes it can be hard. I tend to go to bed quite late as that is when I work, so I don't need to be up as early in the morning. Bedtime is about 1am and I get up at 10am - I always seem to get eight hours sleep.

Do you worry about getting old?

Yes - mostly about getting wrinkles. I just hope in 20 years' time, if I'm still here, I will be able to do what I do now - the wrinkles will come anyway and that's fine. It's about being able to enjoy life.

What is your go-to product/habit that keeps you feeling healthy?

Paula's Choice skincare. It's a brand which is not tested on animals, and fragrance and colour free, recommended to me by Ross Anderson-Doherty (who plays Widow Twankey in Aladdin). He has the most beautiful skin and since I started using Paula's Choice I have, too. I never get a blemish now.

Aladdin will be at The Waterfront Hall until January 8 at various times. For details and tickets, tel: 028 9033 4455 or visit or the box office, now based at the Ulster Hall.
