Me and my health: UTV journalist Eden Wilson on her lifestyle
The 24-year-old UTV journalist produces regional Good Morning Britain, lunch and late news bulletins, and reports on stories across Northern Ireland. Originally from Larne, she recently moved to Belfast with her boyfriend Ben and owns two two-year-old collies, Sheriff and Luna.
Do you take regular exercise and if so, what?
One place you'll never find me is in the gym. But, I love to go on long walks with my dogs about two or three times a week. I also love hitting the road with my bike - it's the only sport I've really taken to. During summer months (because who wants to cycle in rain?) I can cover up to 90 miles. It sounds a lot but somehow my body doesn't get tired of peddling! I actually cycled 300 miles to Paris last year for charity, which was extremely tough but so rewarding when I reached the Eiffel Tower.
What is the worst illness you've had?
I've been lucky in not having any major illness so far. However, I am known as the "cold queen" due to catching every bug that goes around!
How healthy is your diet?
I've been a pescatarian since I was 16 years old, mainly because I don't like the taste of meat, and, in later years, I began thinking about the ethics and environmental outcomes of eating animals. I'm lactose-intolerant too, so I don't eat or drink any dairy products. It was hard to restrict my diet in the beginning but I feel so much healthier cutting out the foods that were upsetting my stomach for years.
Any bad habits?
I have many bad habits but I'm not sure any are health-related. I bit my nails for more than 10 years and managed to stop through putting gel polish on them. I guess that when they finally looked pretty I decided to break the habit.
Do you drink and smoke/ if so how much?
I've never touched a cigarette. Peer pressure doesn't work on me and I'm quite health-conscious too. As for drinking, I love white wine and, on a night out, a mojito wouldn't go amiss. Although it's not often that I actually drink, I enjoy a couple when the occasion strikes.
Do you take any supplements?
I have to take iron supplements due to becoming anaemic every once in a while. It's my own fault for not finding foods with iron in them to replace meat! Other than that, I've recently started taking echinacea in an attempt to ward off colds. Fingers crossed it works for me!
How do you take time out?
Walking the dogs in a peaceful forest is when I feel most relaxed. Or snuggling up with Ben to watch the latest drama or Netflix series is a great de-stresser. I try to avoid looking at my phone in these times to disconnect from the news world. It's good to give the brain a break.
How well do you sleep?
I've never had any issues with sleep. Luckily when I feel stressed or worked up, I fall asleep even quicker. I often work late and early shifts, which can disturb my sleep cycle but if I keep a regular routine, I find I can overcome the imbalance.
Do you worry about getting old?
I don't see getting old as an issue. Society puts an awful lot of pressure, especially on women, to be youthful and somehow stop the wheels of time. It's a silly notion. My mum always said to "grow old gracefully and take care of your skin", so I'll follow in her footsteps.
What is your go-to product that keeps you feeling healthy?
My go-to product is widely available and very affordable - water. It keeps your insides well oiled, your skin hydrated and energy levels stabilised. As for skin products, I love using Liz Earle's cream cleanser, Lush's Angels on Bare Skin daily scrub and Clarins' Duo Serum. The first two are very affordable. As for Clarins, it pains me to fork out that amount of money but it works wonders.
