Take to Belfast Hills on Sunday to support North West Mountain Rescue

Choice of routes for all abilities at Belfast Hills Walking Festival

By Sue Doherty

Hikers, walkers and families are all encouraged to head to the hills on Sunday for the annual Belfast Hill Walking Festival.

The event, which starts and finishes at the Divis Mountain National Trust car park, is also held in association with the National Trust and Cotswold Outdoor.

This year there are two types of walks to choose from -  a 10km (6.2m) circular walk, and a 20km (12.4m) circular walk.

The 10km walk is suitable for all, with any level of fitness and age. This excellent short family hike takes in the Belfast Hills including Black Mountain, and Divis Mountain which provide the backdrop to the city’s skyline.

They offer spectacular views across Northern Ireland, Belfast Lough and as far as Donegal and the coasts of England, Scotland and the Isle of Man.

The route will be marshalled by the North West MRT members and there is an also an option for a guided walk commencing at 10.15am and 10.30am for those who wish to be accompanied during this walk.

Please note that children under 13 years of age can only attend the 10km if accompanied by an adult or as part of an organised and insured youth group.

The 20km all day hike is suitable for those experienced in hill walking with a good level of fitness and offers equally spectacular views. There is also an option for a guided walk commencing at 09.15am and 09.30am.

The NWMRT relies heavily on donations and fundraising events. Come along and meet team members as you enjoy a marshalled walk along Divis and the Black Mountain, with some of the most stunning views of Belfast, Antrim, the Mournes and beyond!

Light refreshments will be provided at the start and finish for participants. There is also the opportunity to speak to staff members from Cotswold Outdoors who will be bringing some outdoor equipment and providing helpful advice.

Last year, many youth groups came along to experience the great sights of Divis, along with individuals raising money for their own good causes and the organisers look forward to welcoming them all again, as well as new participants.

Dogs are permitted on the 10km walk. Suitable robust outdoor waterproof clothing and boots must be worn or carried by all participants and sufficient food and drink for their needs must be carried by all walkers. There will be water points provided along the routes. Routes will be flagged and marshalled by members of the North West MRT.
