I trained as an auctioneer under Ian Wilson of Wilson’s Auctions, who is no relation. It’s not the usual route into estate agency, as most young people take a degree in estates management and become chartered surveyors. For me, however, a move from general auctioneering to property sales was a fairly logical move and I was greatly encouraged by Raymond Hill, who now owns Belfast City Auctions in Carryduff.

Who has inspired you in the property world?

My late father-in-law just loved buying houses, renovating them and selling them on, he gave me the bug. In the business I love the sense of humour of my old colleague John Thompson and I have really only got to know him well recently, but I do envy Eric Cairns’ style — he makes me feel so untidy. But seriously, he was and is a true professional. Most of all, however, I admire my staff and colleagues who have put up with me even during this tough market.

What do you have sitting on your desk?

I have just moved office within the building so my desk is piled high with paperwork. When it’s cleared, however, I’ll have phone, computer and a photo of my three grandkids.

Downtime is?

Spending time with friends and family. Watching Ulster of a Friday evening, skiing in season and I go to Christchurch Belfast which I enjoy.

Do you do lunch?

My wife Ruth and eldest son Trevor run Beaufort Interiors and my other son Jonathan works with me so we all try to meet at lunchtimes from time to time.

What qualifications do you think are essential for estate agency?

We encourage all our staff to take the Technical Award in Residential Estate Agency which is run by the National Association of Estate Agents. We think this gives a good grounding in the basics of the business. The Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute qualifications are also highly desirable. Over and above these, a good attitude is most important.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

My sisters were a teacher and a nurse, my brother was a social worker so I followed the family tradition of joining the caring professions and became an estate agent. That’s less of a joke than you would believe!

If you could give it all up tomorrow, where would you move to?

A few years ago we bought a chalet in the French Alps which we let out, and we love it. So that’s where I’d go.
