To the superstitious it is the unluckiest day in the calendar. But for proud parents Brendan and Lesley-Anne McKeown, Friday the 13th was the best of days.
The couple, both journalists who live in Belfast, have welcomed their first child into the world.
Rory Henry McKeown weighed 8lbs 6oz and measured 51cm when he was born on December 13 at the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital at 3.25pm.
Lesley-Anne, a former Belfast Telegraph reporter, said: "We are not superstitious at all so had no qualms about going to hospital on a date that is synonymous with bad luck.
"In fact, we consider ourselves really lucky to have Rory.
"Like all new parents we are still trying to find our feet. Christmas and New Year flew past in a flash.
"But thankfully Rory is a fairly contented little baby and, so far, seems to eat and sleep when he's supposed to.
"We haven't had too many sleepless nights as yet and are just keeping our fingers crossed it continues that way."
Rory is the third grandchild on both sides and is a younger cousin to Oliver (3) and Aine (10 months) Henry, who live in Ballycastle, Co Antrim, as well as one-year-old twins, Fergal and Sorley McKeown in Belfast.
Brendan said: "We couldn't have wished for a better baby. He loves his grub, which is something of a family trait, and is pretty well behaved."
The couple would like to thank the staff at the Royal who provided care during the three-night stay for mum and baby.
