Just born: Skyla and Cara Cunningham
Shortly after midday on June 20, two identical baby girls entered the world at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.
Gillian Cunningham's two little bundles of joy were born at 12.25pm and 12.33pm — weighing in at 5lb 8oz and 6lb 12oz respectively.
The proud mum-of-six was beaming after the two newest members of her family, Cara and Skyla, arrived after a short labour.
“It's been so great so far — I knew I was expecting twins, so at least it wasn't a shock,” said Gillian.
She came into the Ulster Hospital in the early hours of Monday and gave birth to two healthy babies only a few hours later.
Gillian, a legal secretary, discovered she was having twins on Christmas Eve when she arrived at hospital for her first scan.
“It was a complete and utter shock because they were just there on the scans — these two wee heads,” she said.
Gillian (33), who has lived in Portavogie for six years along with her husband Michael, said the two little girls were already behaving themselves.
“Oh yeah, behaving very well. They keep sucking the back of each other’s heads — they are |really quiet and peaceful,” she said.
They are so good; all they do is eat and sleep.”
The exhausted, but happy mum said she was looking forward to the months ahead.
“I'm a bit nervous just to see how it all goes, coping with the other lot as well. But, so far, it's been great — I really can't wait,” she added.
She said her other children — aged 12, eight, four and 18 months — were waiting patiently back home to welcome the two newest members of the family.
“The kids back home are really, really happy and they’re very excited to see their new sisters.”
Gillian said she was thrilled to get home on Wednesday to show off the two little miracles — who are already sporting wispy light brown hair — to eager friends and family.
