Just Married: Marie and Gareth Martel, university sweethearts tie the knot after coolest of proposals on ski slopes

Marie and Gareth Martel are enjoying married life in south Belfast following their wedding in Scotland.

Gareth (32), a doctor from Bangor, Co Down, and Marie (30), a chartered accountant from Fraserburgh in Scotland, fell in love after meeting in 2005.

"We met at university in Aberdeen," Marie said. "We were both in the sailing team."

They became engaged in December 2013 on a skiing holiday in La Tania.

"We skied over to Courchevel one day and he brought me down to an empty slope and proposed on the piste," Marie said.

The couple married at January 17 at Meldrum Parish Church, Old Meldrum, in Aberdeenshire.

"The service was really nice," Marie said.

"The church is very small so it was quite intimate and very special."

The reception took place at Meldrum House, where the couple's first dance was to an acoustic version of Kings of Leon song Sex on Fire.

"It was an amazing day," Marie said.

"It was so lovely.

"We had been so worried about the weather because it had been rotten, windy, rainy all week but on the day it was perfect.

"Cold but sunny.

"At the end of the reception it started pouring down with snow. It was amazing."

Marie and Gareth said they were overwhelmed by the number of people keen to share their special day with them in Scotland.

"We appreciate everyone from Northern Ireland travelling to the north of Scotland to share our big day," Marie added.

A surprise honeymoon followed the wedding.

"We flew off to Whistler in Canada to ski and then to St Lucia," Marie said.

She added: "Gareth organised it all by himself. I didn't find out until after the ceremony!"

Married life is going well for the newlyweds.

"It's great," she said.

"It's the same but feels nice to have the same name.

"We are really loving it."
