Recipe: Treacle wheaten bread

What you'll need

2 x 500g loaf tins

Knob of butter to grease the tins

250g medium wholemeal flour

250g coarse wholemeal flour

100g jumbo oat flakes

1 tsp salt

1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda

2 tbsp clear honey

2 tbsp black treacle

1 carton (568ml) buttermilk

Makes 2 loaves

Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas 6/400°F. Butter and flour the tins well. Mix together all the dry ingredients in a bowl, make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk then add the honey and treacle.Work everything together lightly with a wooden spoon and pour into the tins, leaving the tops craggy; sprinkle with some more oats.

Bake for about 40-45 minutes — allow the bread to cool a little in the tins before turning out onto a wire rack.
