Gym friend snubbed me in public

Fiona Caine is here to help if you have a relationship, sexual, marriage or family problem.

For the past two years I’ve been going to a local gym where there is a man who does his workout at the same time as me.

We’ve become quite chatty but it’s never gone any further than that – although I’d quite like it to.

Recently I was at a local pub with some friends when I saw him and went over to say hello.

He seemed really embarrassed that I spoke to him and made a hasty exit.

I thought he liked me but now I’m not so sure. JO

Perhaps he couldn't place you and was embarrassed to be confronted by someone he didn't recognise?

Perhaps he is very shy and wants to be on his own?

Perhaps he was uncomfortable with so many of his friends around?

You will never know what was going on unless you ask, so the next time you see him at the gym, sound him out.

Just say, “I hope I didn't make it awkward for you when I spoke to you in the pub last week”, and see how he reacts.

You could even suggest getting a drink together sometime if you really want to know how he feels about you.

He may, of course, be married (or in a steady relationship) and when you stumbled into his local pub where he is known, he felt he had no option but to beat a hasty retreat.
