I fantasise about stabbing my father

Northern Ireland's number one agony aunt Fiona answers your problems

Dear Fiona, I was hoping you could give me some advice about whether my thoughts are normal. My mum and dad divorced a few years ago but I still see my dad regularly and love him.

I’ve accepted that they’re better apart than together so there’s no hard feelings now.

However, thoughts of stabbing my dad with a knife just won’t go away, even though I would never want to hurt him in real life. It has become an obsession and these images just keep popping into my head over and over again. I told my mum, but she just laughed and said they’re perfectly normal and she sometimes thinks really weird things but just pushes them to the back of her mind.

Worried Son

Dear Worried Son,

Unfortunately, your mother is wrong about this. Obsessional, repetitive and anxiety provoking thoughts of murdering your father are not normal. She’s absolutely right that random thoughts of an aggressive or sexual nature may temporarily and inexplicably flash through our minds, but they’re usually fleeting and harmless.

However, it’s obvious that you’re tortured and frightened and so it’s imperative that you uncover what’s driving this obsessive thinking.

Please impress upon your mother how you’re truly feeling and insist that she helps you to seek intervention from a psychologist or therapist.
