I want another baby, but husband doesn’t

Fiona Caine is here to help if you have a relationship, sexual, marriage or family problem

I’m 36 years old and I have been married for nine years. My husband and I have a six-year-old daughter and I would dearly like another child, but my husband is adamant that he doesn’t want any more. He says we can’t afford it.

I have tried to explain that I think it’s unhealthy for our daughter to grow up as an only child but he won’t listen. TT

This issue has already driven a big wedge between the two of you.

Both partners should agree on important issues such as bringing a new life into the world.

You’d be running a huge risk of him resenting or even rejecting a second child. This is something you have to talk out properly — you need to know whether he is ever likely to change his mind.

If he isn’t, then either you accept his decision or, if you’re that desperate for a second child, you may have to think about leaving him.

That may sound harsh but, in this case, a compromise simply isn’t possible
