Show respect for company's views should be respect

Brian McClinton (My View, November 14) in commenting on the Ashers' gay cake issue, uses a quote from Evelyn Beatrice Hall's, The Friends of Voltaire, 1906: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Mr McClinton also states that tolerance "...may be defined as the deliberate choice not to interfere with or prohibit beliefs and behaviour of which we disapprove".

Might I suggest that, had those who ordered the cake applied such principles, they would have informed Ashers Bakery that, while they were disappointed at the decision not to fulfil the order, they nevertheless respected the company's views and would take their business elsewhere.
