The doggy in the window that became singer Lita's pet hate

The first No1 in the UK pop charts with a question in its title was How Much is That Doggy In The Window? The novelty song, written by one Bob Merrill, was a hit for Lita Roza in 1953, I remind myself today.

Lita, I remember, was at the Grand Opera House in Belfast that same year singing about the dog with the waggily tail and her other big success, Allentown Jail

She died in 2008 at the age of 82.

The Doggy In The Window nonsense piece was based on an old folk tune. The song was recorded in the first place by Patti Page, but only became a seller in the UK when Lita got hold of it. Though Miss Roza hated that song.
