Amazon founder Jeff Bezos 'does not have pre-nup'- meaning divorce will make wife richest woman in the world
Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos and his wife do not have a prenuptial agreement and she will be entitled to half of his £120billion fortune, it has been widely reported.
Their divorce is being filed in Washington, where assets acquired during the marriage by either spouse are equally split, unless there is a prenup.
This would make MacKenzie Bezos (48) the world's richest woman, with a fortune of around £60billion.
The couple wed in 1993, with Mr Bezos amassing his fortune during their marriage.
The Amazon founder made the announcement on Twitter on Wednesday, saying that the pair will remain “cherished friends” after deciding to divorce after 25 years of marriage.
Mr Bezos' wealth has grown exponentially in the last five years, with Forbes estimating his net worth at around £25billion in 2014.
“We want to make people aware of a development in our lives,” he wrote.
“As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.
“We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.
“We’ve had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures. Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends.”
